Master marvelous finishes that can elevate your garments from homemade to high-end! Join me, Lynda Maynard, for my second online Craftsy class, Sewing on the Edge: Finishing Techniques, and learn to sew over a dozen luxurious edge finishes on your custom garments.
With my help, you'll gain the confidence to apply professional finishing techniques to garments sewn from any knit or woven fabrics—even on delicate silks and sheers!
At the beginning of class, you'll learn to sew a flawless double fold bias binding around woven and sheer necklines, as well as how to add piping to your binding. Then, I'll show you how to finish both woven and knit necklines with the more delicate single fold binding. You'll also see how to create a lightweight, invisible "Baby French" facing.
Next, you'll learn to sew a fabulous banded finish on knit and woven V-necks that doesn't pull or ripple. I'll also guide you through how to bring it all together with a sporty double needle topstitch. We'll move on to sewing a banded, curved neckline that lies flat and smooth.
After that, I'll cover how to work with welt edgings and flange closures. You'll learn a neat trick to make and turn an effortless super tube, as well as how to use it to finish a raw edge with a crisp, flat welt edging, or a stunning scalloped welt edging. I'll even walk you through finishing edges with flange closures, which work wonders for chiffon and other sheer fabrics.
In our following lesson, I'll teach you how to create a decorative contrast with wide hem bands, use faced hems for smooth results on shaped hemlines, and sew organza bubble hems that give a skirt body and make it easier to wear.
Finally, you'll discover elegant decorative finishes such as the Petersham peek and Hong Kong seams. Sign up for Sewing on the Edge: Finishing Techniques, and learn to topstitch, edgestitch, create flat felled seams, and stabilize delicate fabrics with total confidence.

As a child, I enjoyed turning pillowcases into "clothes." When my mother noticed my enthusiasm (and found out where her pillowcases were disappearing to) she arranged for me to attend sewing lessons. Throughout middle and high school, I continued to pursue sewing with unbridled enthusiasm, before going on to earn a BA in textiles and clothing.
After graduation, I taught sewing to small groups of students in my home. When my familial responsibilities eventually lessened, I welcomed opportunities to teach at local community colleges and sewing schools.
I've taught sewing in countless classrooms over the course of the past 35 years, and I run a business designing and fabricating custom apparel for private clients. I'm also the author of The Dressmaker's Handbook of Couture Sewing Techniques, and the instructor of the Craftsy class,Sew the Perfect Fit.
